Winged or Flightless? Understanding Cockroach Anatomy by Species

Cockroaches can infest homes in large numbers. It is easy for them to get into any house, even if there is a small hole or a little space. In Orem, cockroach infestation is not uncommon, and you may see it in every other house.

However, if you are taking the preventive measures in the right way, then it should not make it to your place. If you notice any cracks or leaky spots, get them repaired in time. Do not delay or keep it for some other time. Their infestation needs to be treated right away.

You can use some spray or other methods to deal with them. Cockroaches can infest homes to get food or seek shelter if it is winter. If you leave food in the open, you are increasing the chances of making it infected.

It is essential that you keep all your food in tight jars and do not leave anything open. Cockroaches are pretty good at survival, too; you can remove their head, and they will still survive for about a week. Read more about their characteristics and behavior.

What do the younger cockroaches look like?

The younger ones are called nymphs, and they come out of their eggs once the incubation period is over. This time period can last for about sixty days at most and twenty minutes at most. It will depend on what species it is and the weather conditions that are provided to them.

Once you see them out of their eggs, you will notice that their bodies are white in color. Gradually, over time, you will start noticing that their skin is turning dark in color. The miniature ones are different from the adults as they do not have wings and are different in color as well.

In German cockroaches, you will notice that their younger ones are somewhat darker than the adults. During their growing stage, these cockroaches go through several molts.

There is also a transitional period between them, which is called “instars”. To become an adult cockroach, the baby cockroaches will have to go through at least seven instars.

What are the different types of cockroaches?

You may see common types of cockroaches. However, you need to know their distinctive features in order to differentiate:

Brown banded Cockroach

There are distinct bands present on the wings of these cockroaches. That is what separates them from other types. If we talk about their size, they are nearly the same size as the German cockroaches. If you come across even one of these, know that their entire colony must be nearby.

They put their eggs in places where they cannot be seen and remain hidden away. Walls and ceilings can be taken as an example. The male ones among them can also fly, but the females cannot. They stay on the ground only.

As far as their place of living is concerned, they prefer remaining in dry areas that are also warm. They can make your furniture or cabinets their hiding spaces.

Smoky brown cockroach

They have been given this name because of the color of their body. They also possess two wings, which are actually functional, unlike other species. There are about ten egg cases that the females produce, and there are twenty eggs in each one of them.

While other cockroaches are not really attracted to lights, smoky brown cockroaches are drawn to them. They are usually seen in buildings that have left their lights on.

However, they prefer living outside more and living in spaces that seem protected. They prefer living in spaces where they can get moisture, such as tree holes.

There are some other types too, including oriental cockroaches, American cockroaches, wood cockroaches, etc.
